The Castlandhill Naval Radio Station is marked on a map of 1916 that records its defences. The station was surrounded by an irregular barbed wire entanglement. At five of its corners a blockhouse is marked: three are marked as of concrete, two as of wood. Two of the pillboxes seem to survive to have been incorporated into the Second World War defences (NT18SW 222.02 and 222.03); a third (NT18SW 222.01) may also be of First World War date, although the position marked on the map does not coincide.
The eastern approach to the radio station is covered by a complex of defences on Muckle Hill, comprising barbed wire entanglements, trenches and five blockhouses.
