'The North Loch was formed at the fortifying of Edinburgh, about the middle of the fifteenth century, to save the expence of a wall on that side of the Old Town of Edinburgh, the Loch being formed by the erection of a dam at the east end of the Loch to keep in the water, whereby was formed the North Loch. This dam had a sluice in it. Maitland states that the sluice was opened in 1743 to let out the water, when the site of the Loch became dry.'
