Archaeology Notes

NJ92NW 39 centred 9275 2855

Esslemont Brick and Tile Works has been demolished and, apart from minor scarps in arable fields marking the former edge of the clay-pits, all that is now visible is a small water-filled pit (NJ 9286 2852). The works is depicted on the first edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire, sheet xlvii, 1870) when it comprised four buildings situated on the E side of a large pit (centred NJ 9274 2856). By the end of the century (OS 6-inch map, Aberdeenshire, sheet xlvii.NW, 1901) most of the buildings had been demolished, and new buildings had been erected slightly to the S; new deposits of clay (centred NJ 9286 2852) had been opened up to the NE.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS, ATW), 29 January 1997.
