Shaft/Mine Details: Several surface mines, including nos. 3, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15 and 16, and Hagshaw South. Bankend No. 3 was situated at NS 7923 3309 (site No. NS73SE/8), and No. 13, which had a shaft, was at NS 7988 3351 (site No. NS73SE/7)
Details in 1948: Output 270 tons per day, 70,000 tons per annum, stoop and room and longwall working. 221 employees. 2 screens for dry coal, Jig (Dickson and Mann washer) [coal washing and sorting system using a 'shaking' conveyor submerged in water]. No baths, small canteen serving packed meals. 100% electricity from public supply. Report dated 12-08-1948.
Other Details: Sinking of No. 12 (NS 792 339) by the National Coal Board (NCB) commenced in 1951, but the resulting mine may never have produced significantly, being abandoned in 1954. The entire area was subsequently engulfed by a very large opencast mine (named Dalquhandy).
