Archaeology Notes

NS39SE 142 3973 9052

Cairn. A well constructed sub-oval structure measuring 3.30m by 1.50m standing to 0.7m in height and oriented at 346 degrees. Constructed of sandstone and quartz boulders and cobbles of 0.4m by 0.3m by 0.2m on average. A glacial erratic is incorporated into the N end of the cairn and it appears stones have been deposited between this glacial erratic boulder and another boulder to the E rather than being tumbled stones. The cairn, which may well represent a burial, is in good condition with only some tumble on the S and E sides. The cairn has not been robbed. A few white quartz pebbles are present in the cairn material. The cairn is located 12m from the HWM and at the time the cairn as built it appears the loch came to within 5m of the S end of the cairn. There is a fine view to the S to the gap between Creinch and Torrinch.

A birch tree on the E side of the cairn should be removed and the monument should be monitored to ensure trees do not become established.

NS 386 913 and NS 400 908 The second of three phases was completed on the assessment of the islands and crannogs in Loch Lomond. Twenty-five islands were visited during the survey, the majority were found to be archaeologically sterile. The two islands in Stirling where sites were recorded have the sites listed in abbreviated form below. Full reports will be deposited in the NMRS and Central Region SMR. See also separate entries under Kilmaronock parish, West Dunbartonshire and Arrochar and Luss parishes, Argyll and Bute.

FIRAT 1996

There is a small heap of stones lying against and between two earthfast boulders situated just above the High Water Mark on the SW of Inchfad. This is not a burial cairn as suggested in the previous description.
