Archaeology Notes

NJ70NE 69 centred 7916 0663

Location formerly entered as centred NJ 7921 0669.

(Location amended to centred NJ 7916 0663). An area of rig-and-furrow is visible in low-lying woodland about 340m S of Kirktonbridge Cottages (NJ70NE 103). The rigs, which measure about 4m in breadth, are now largely obscured by coniferous woodland, but their full extent is revealed by RAF vertical aerial photographs (58 RAF 1296, prints 0003-04) taken in 1953. In the northernmost part of the area the rigs are aligned ESE and WNW, but elsewhere they lie either NNE and SSW or N and S. Some of the alignments display a marked curve.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 19 August 1996.
