East gate (tower lodges and gates), 1922-3, A Marshall Mackenzie & Son, grandiloquent entrance formed by pair of symmetrical four-storey tower-houses in fine granite ashlar with battlemented parapets, caphouses and circular stair-towers. Massive plain gatepiers topped by gryphons support gigantic wrought-iron gates. Screen walls of bull-faced granite running down to Loch of Skene flaunt square angle-turrets and a boathouse with portcullis gate. Immensely

witty and assured fantasy.
