Archaeology Notes

NO39NW 8 centred on 344 975

(NO 3436 9749) Air photography (AAS/98/01/G1/29-30 and AAS/98/01/CT, flown 27 January 1998) has recorded the remains of a depopulated settlement in an area of rough grazing on a moderate SE-facing slope at an altitude of 290m OD. The settlement comprises longhouses, enclosures and subdued rig-and-furrow cultivation.

A township comprising five unroofed buildings, one of which has two compartments, one enclosure, an unroofed circular structure and some walls is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire, 1869, sheet xci). One unroofed building and one enclosure are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1971).
