Archaeology Notes

NS39NE 29 3765 9921

A sheep ree is depicted and annotated on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Stirlingshire 1864-5-6, sheet vi). Birmingham University Field Archaeological Unit recorded a circular or ovoid structure at about the same location during a survey of the Ben Lomond estate for the National Trust for Scotland (NMRS MS 975/1, no.170). It measures 5.8m by 5.7m over stone-built walls. On the downhill side the wall is set on a compact slope of stones whilst a slight gap on the NNE may represent an entrance. On the E side of the interior there are possibly edge set kerb stones and on the S there are also edge set stone present.

Information from RCAHMS (PM) 12 March 1998; Birmingham University Field Archaeology Unit, 1997; NMRS MS 975/1, no.170
