Archaeology Notes

NH54SE 14 5583 4178.

A short distance to the N-E of the house (No. 6 South Clunes) is a cairn roughly built of stones in the shape of a horse-shoe.

A Low 1934.

Known locally as Carn Righ Dharaich, this pile of stones at NH 5583 4178 is thought to be of a defensive nature.

It lies on a small knoll overlooking the precipitous slopes of the Moniack Burn. It is a roughly semi-circular bank of stones, c.6.0m wide by 1.5m high, and 17.0m between its ends. Its S. end almost reaches the cliff above the burn, and if the N. side was extended c.20m to reach the burn, it would enclose a well defended piece of land, but there is no evidence that it has been done. Despite Mr. Forbes (J Forbes, No.6 South Clunes, Kirkhill, Kiltarlity, Inverness-shire) contention that walling was visible many years ago, this is probably no more than heavy field clearance.

No change to previous field report.
