This site was visited and photographed by J R Hume, University of Strathclyde, 3 September 1975. See NMRS MS/749 [Dunbartonshire Bonhill/ Balloch parish] for contact prints JR Hume H75/53/13-14.

(Location cited as NS 389 819) Balloch Central Station, opened 1850 by the Caledonian and Dunbartonshire Railway. A 2-platform through station, with the offices on the up-platform, in a 2-storey, coursed-rubble block with a single storey wing. The building has been partly modernised.

This station was opened (as Balloch Station) on 15 July 1850, and renamed Balloch Central Station (by British Railways) on 30 July 1952. It closed on 24 April 1988, being replaced by the present Balloch Station (to the S of the level crossing).
