James Gillespie Graham had done everything in his power to facilitate the operations, consistent with the substantial

execution of the work but in consequence of having no Clerk of Works ar Murthly some mistakes had taken place which had to be rectified. David, son to James Smith, had recently been sent to act as Clerk of Works and everything had gone on satisfactorily under his care.

he has visited Murthly and found the workmen busily employed levelling the drive in front of the New House, and that they had completed the Terrace as far as the road. He considers that Birnam is the greatest of all improvements particularly the spot chosen for the erection of the bridge.

The shell stood empty until it was demolished in 1950 after the 2nd World War.

It took 2 years to demolish and its stone was used to build houses in Pitlochry, Tarbert and Loch Lomondside and for the repair of Dunkeld Bridge. F610

Sir John Archibald Drummond Steuart 1794-1838

He began to build a New House altogether on a site 300 yards to the South. He commissioned James Gillespie Graham as Architect. The shell was completed by 1838 but Sir John dies (leaving a debt of quarter of a million) before he could move in and demolish the Old Castle. F610
