Pow of Lindores [NAT]
OS 1:10,000 map, 1974.
Lindores Pow, Fife. Opening as it did into the South Deep of the Firth of Tay, Lindores Poe, like the neighbouring Shore of Newburgh, was a convenient place for vessels to lie on their way up the river to Perth. A ferry was also crossing the Firth from Lindores at least as early as 1600, when the charter mentions 'libertatem cymbe vulgo ane ferrie boit'; while a record of 1722 states that 'from this to the pou of Erroll which lyes opposite to it is a common ferrie each side keeping two boats'. Before the days of agricultural improvement, as a result of which a large field has been reclaimed from the mud-flats and the mouth of the Pow canalised, a natural tidal inlet probably existed here, by which boats could have approached conveniently close to the Abbey precinct (NO21NW 5.00). For that matter, the Pow could equally well have served the pre- and proto-historic dwellers in the fort on Clatchard's Craig (NO21NW 18).
A Graham 1971.
The Pow of Lindores extends from NO c. 2448 1861, a point close to Parkhill steading (NO21NW 97) to NO 2412 1888, where it enters the Firth of Tay. It forms the boundary between the parishes of Newburgh and Abdie and is occupied for most of its length by an overgrown drainage-ditch.
