Accessing Scotland's Past Project

The remains of a disused limekiln are recorded on the 1972 Ordnance Survey 1:10000 map, situated about 750m north-east of the summit of Muckle Tomlair. The kiln probably dates to the nineteenth century.

The remains of a lime kiln are situated on a moderate NW-facing slope at an altitude of about 370m OD.

A series of lime quarries of various sizes survive as deep hollows throughout the wood and attest to the probable quarrying of lime before the erection of the impressive 19th-century lime kiln nearby.

This project is part of the Forestry Commission's management strategy to recognise and safeguard sites in advance of timber operations that may be potentially damaging to the archaeological resource.
