Archaeology Notes

NO63NW 22 603 377.

See also NO63NW 23.

Aerial photographs show a set of at least four parallel linear cropmarks, running across four fields 450m ESE of Inverpeffer in an E - W direction. Visible from NO 603 377 (where they adjoin a short linear cropmark running N - S) to NO 600 377, a distance of about 250m, they may be traces of gardens and trackways associated with the now demolished Inverpeffer farmhouse and farmsteading (NO63NW 17), recorded as cropmarks immediately to the W, and depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Forfarshire 1865, sheet lii). A linear cropmark, running from NO c.6019 3769 to NO c.6008 3766, intersects the cropmarks of a farm trackway in an adjacent field, and a sub-circular cropmark with a diameter of about 9m is visible at NO c.6022 3773, 2m S of the linear cropmarks. Previously interpretated as a rectilinear enclosure and cropmark.
