(HU 4762 9394) Chapel (LB) (Site of)

O.S.6"map, Shetland, 2nd ed.,(1900).

The site of an ancient chapel.

Name Book 1878.

No trace of a chapel could be found at the site indicated by the OS, but, according to local information, it stood at HU 4781 9394. There, overlaid by modern sheep-shelters and mutilated by robbing, are the vague footings of a building of indeterminate length, and about 3.7 m wide internally, over walls 1.0 m thich. It is oriented E-W and the E end appears to be apsidal. There is a cross-wall towards the E end and traces of a probable entrance into the "nave" on the S side.

Although the evidence suggests that the building is in fact a chapel, the amorphous nature of the remains precludes positive classification.

Visited by OS(NKB) 19th May 1969.
