Activities

Field Visit (November 1996 - May 1997)

NO30NE 23.04 From 3522 0888 to 3520 0866

This group of remains comprises a limestone mine, the tramway that links it to Cults Lime Works and one building which is probably associated with the workings.

The mine (NO 3520 0871) was served by a double-tracked tramway, which retains some wooden sleepers with the winding cable guides still surviving in the trackbed within the entrance to the mine. Outside the mine, the tramway runs northwards, entering the Cults Lime Works over a bridge, now largely removed, and ending on the upper floor of a corrugated-iron roofed, brick building, which has used latterly as a hopper for the raw limestone.

A post-1945 date is likely for these structures, as neither the mine nor the tramway are depicted on any of the OS maps of the 1920s and 30s (OS 25-inch map, Fifeshire and Fifeshire 1920 sheet xiii SE, revised 1938. The structures are however, shown on the current edition of the OS 1:2500 plans (1965) which were reconstituted from the former post-war County Series plans and revised in 1964.

Visited by RCAHMS (DE) November 1996 and May 1997
