Archaeology Notes

NJ71NW 109 7341 1906

Walker and Beattie's estate plan of 1838 depicts a mill on the W side of a lade on the right bank of the River Don. The 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire, sheet liv, 1869) also depicts the mill and notes it as a Corn Mill; it also depicts a Saw Mill and one other building lying to the E of the lade. By the end of the century, the Corn Mill had been removed, but the Saw Mill and other building were both still roofed (OS 6-inch map, Aberdeenshire, 2nd edition, sheet liv.SW, 1901).

A sales brochure of 1932 provides particulars of a sawmill and house (part of lot 61, p. 45) at Whitehaugh. The house comprised four rooms and a kitchen with a good garden. There were also a wash-house, a wood store, a closet and a workshop. The sawmill is described as having a stone base and a 'water wheel at the side'.

In 1932 the house and sawmill was let to a Mr Grant at an annual rent of ?10.
