Archaeology Notes

NH45NE 16 c. 48 58.

Three short cists and a separate 'cinerary urn' were found in 1896 in a mound of sand and gravel at Croch Fionne, Strathpeffer. Formed of slabs of claystone with a large cover-stone, two of cists were about 3 1/2' long and the third somewhat smaller. Each contained a fragmentary skeleton, but no grave goods. The urn was found near the centre of the mound in a black mass containing charcoal. A similar substance filled the urn which was 6" high, 7 1/4" across the mouth 5 1/4" at the base and was decorated below the lip with oblique intersecting lines.(Information from Dr Fortescue Fox)

No bone fragments occurred.
