Accessing Scotland's Past Project

The 1975 Ordnance Survey 1:10,000 map records the remains of an 'old limekiln' situated about 100m south-east of Upper Blairnain steading. This limekiln appears to have been in use in the later nineteenth century, as it is recorded on the 1st edition of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map of Banffshire (1872-4). It was probably associated with the steading and it would have been used to produce quantities of lime, used to make acidic soils suitable for cultivation. The kiln appears to have been disused by the last years of the nineteenth century, as it is not shown on the 2nd edition 6-inch map of Banffshire (1903-5).
