Present location: in the West Sandwick graveyard, Yell.

Evidence for discovery: recorded in 2000.

Present condition: the shaft has broken away and here is damage to one corner of the upper arm.

Description

This fragment consists of the upper and side-arms of a cruciform stone.

Date: ninth to eleventh centuries.

Archaeology Notes

HU48NE 1 4522 8883.

(HU 4523 8886) Chapel (LB) (Site of) Burial Ground

OS 6" map, Shetland, 2nd ed., (1900).

The site of what is supposed to have been a pre-Reformation chapel. The burial-ground is still in use.

Name Book 1878.

No trace and no further information. Burial ground still used.

Visited by OS (NKB) 13 May 1969.
