Archaeology Notes

NS55SW 47 5282 5164

NS 528 516 Two vaguely defined circles in improved agricultural land. Circle 1 has an apparent oval shape, and measures 19m in diameter at its widest point, the surrounding bank measuring roughly 2m in width. On the NE side of the circle within the bank is a partly grass-covered stone, measuring 1.8m long. Circle 2 lies S of circle 1, and is less well-defined, but appears to be 28m in diameter at its widest point. To the N, the circle forms a low concave area. A sunken trackway with no upturn is evident, this passing between the two circles.

NS 528 516 The remains of several abandoned buildings (?Mid Moorhouse Farm) are evident, along with other features including cairns, cut out enclosures and revetment banking. Many parts of the farmstead are now represented by grass-covered mounds.

Full plans and report are lodged with the NMRS, South West Water and West of Scotland Archaeology Service SMR.

R L Hunter and S L Hunter 1997

A farmstead comprising one unroofed building of two compartments and an attached enclosure is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Renfrewshire 1858-63, sheet xviii). The unroofed building and an incomplete enclosure are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1981).

Information from RCAHMS (SAH) 26 April 2000

An archaeological survey was carried out as part of an ongoing project on a farm by farm basis. The features described are previously unrecorded.

NS 5272 5176. Clearance cairn; 7m diameter x 1.4m high.

A full report will be lodged with the NMRS and WoSAS

J Brassington, R L Hunter and S L Hunter 2000

The remains of South Langlee farmstead were recorded at this location as part of the East Renfrewshire Farm Survey. The farm is shown on the 1789 plan and OS 1st edition map.

S Hothersall, R L Hunter, S L Hunter, 2003.
