Archaeology Notes

HU47SE 3 4571 7000.

"What appears to be an even more ruinous cairn" lies about 350 yds. SW of No. 1288 ( ? homestead - HU47SE 2). It seems to have been oval and to have measures 43' NE-SW by 23' NW-SE. Near the south end a setting of small upright stones rises about a foot above the turf. The RCAHM interpret- ed this as the south half of an oval chamber and the south side of its entrance passage, but Miss Henshall does not agree. The 'entrance passage' starts at the east margin and runs westwards for 8'6". The 'chamber' is 11'6" broad and 8' long. Near its west side is an upright stone, 1'8" wide, 11" thick and 3'3" high, set in a packing of small stones.

RCAHMS 1946. Visited 1930; A S Henshall 1963. Visited 1959.

The only structure visible in the area, at HU 4570 7000, bears little resemblance to the feature described by the RCAHM and, although unclassified, may be the remains of a pigsty. It is situated on a dry rise in a wet hollow and consists of a setting of stones forming a rough rectangle about 4.5m by 3.0m, with one upright stone at the N end, and another, almost prostrate, beside it.

Visited by OS(AA) 13th December 1968.

Activities

Field Visit (9 July 1930)

Cairn, Noness Head. What appears to be a second and even more ruinous cairn lies about 350 yds to the SW [of HU47SE 2]. It seems to have been oval and to have measured 43 ft. from N.E. to S.W. by 23 ft. from N.W. to S.E. Near the S. end a setting of small upright stones, which rise about a foot above the turf, may represent the S. half of an oval chamber and the S. side of its entrance-passage. The latter starts at the E. margin and runs westwards for 8 ft. 6 in. The chamber is 11 ft. 6 in. broad, and has a present length of 8 ft. Near its W. side is an upright stone, 1 ft . 8 in. wide, 11 in. thick, and 3 ft. 3 in. high, set in a packing of small stones.

RCAHMS 1946, visited 23 July 1930.
