Activities

Field Visit (21 March 1973)

NH33SE 13 3888 3177 and 3886 3172

Centred at NH 388 319 on a S-facing slope are two stone-walled huts (A and B) and a contemporary field system.

Both huts are circular, each on a shelf, and are formed by a wall of indeterminate thickness. The measurements are given between wall centres.

Hut 'A' (NH 3886 3172) measures about 12.5m in diameter. It is mutilated by forestry ploughing and the entrance is not evident.

'B' (NH 3888 3177) measures about 11.0m in diameter. It is over- laid by a forestry fence and mutilated in the S half by forestry ploughing. A block on edge, probably an outer facing stone, is in the W arc. The entrance cannot be seen.

The field system consists of occasional stone clearance heaps with lynchets and natural terraces forming plots averaging 35m by 25m.

Huts surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (I S S) 21 March 1973

Field Visit (7 August 1997)

Only the northern hut-circle (B in OS record), lying at the edge of a conifer plantation that has been clear-felled,

is presently visible. The hut-circle measures 7m in diameter within a stony bank 2.5m in thickness and 0.3m in height, but the S half appears to have been damaged by afforestation. The second hut-circle recorded in 1973 was not located, probably due to the disturbance of the ground by afforestation. The field-system recorded by the OS (1973) was not found either, but it may have been obscured by the scrub woodland.

Field Visit (6 December 1999)

Two hut-circles and a field system comprising of two groups of clearance cairns situated in an area of felled forestry were noted during the course of a pre-afforestation survey by Wordsworth Archaeological Services.
