Archaeology Notes

(8) A headstone of the Whithorn School. This is one of the earliest and dates from the 10th century.

On both sides of the circular head is a plain cross with expanded arms, the ends separated by a slight groove; bosses mark the centre of the head and the circular spaces between the arms. On each face of the shaft is a panel of interlace, the strands emphasised by a slight central groove. One of the interlaced designs includes rings.

Radford and Donaldson 1953b, 40.
