Accessing Scotland's Past Project

The farmsteading of Colnabaichin is situated approximately 250m north of the River Don, sheltered by the lower slopes of the Carn na Gobhair. Comprising an L-plan steading, with the farmhouse lying a short distance to the south-east, it is a typical example of an improvement period farm.

The 1st edition of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map, which dates from 1869, shows the farmsteading as consisting of a disparate group of small, mostly rectangular structures, all re-arranged and rebuilt by 1902, the date of the next edition.

The agricultural improvements of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries transformed the farming landscape of Scotland, with the new, larger, stone-built steadings including animal stalls and grain mills.
