Shankend Station [NAT]

OS 1:10,000 map, 1982.

This intermediate station on the Edinburgh-Carlisle main line of the North British Rly. (the 'Waverley route') was opened on 1 July 1862 (by the Border Union Rly); it closed to regular passenger traffic (with the rest of the line) on 6 January 1969.

R V J Butt 1995.

Shankend Station is situated on a ledge cut into the hillside by the construction of the railway, about 253m SE of Shankend Viaduct (NT50NW 30).

The station consists of two passenger platforms, an up (to London) and a down on the W side (to Edinburgh), a main station building on the E side and two bays for goods traffic, one facing N and one facing S. There was a footbridge connecting the two passenger platforms, but this has been removed since the closure of the line. The station buildings are presently occupied and well maintained though the down platform has been removed and the trackbed is now being used by the local farmer

The station area is visible on vertical air photographs (OS/65/4, 474-476, flown 29 March 1965), which shows that at this date the track had been removed from most of the goods sidings, except the two platform bays.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), August 2006; A Wham 2004

The station was photographed by RCAHMS as part of the Waverley Line Project. The station buildings are in private ownership property and the immediate environs were not entered, the images being taken from outside the property boundary.
