Project (1997)
The Public Monuments and Sculpture Association (http://www.pmsa.org.uk/) set up a National Recording Project in 1997 with the aim of making a survey of public monuments and sculpture in Britain ranging from medieval monuments to the most contemporary works. Information from the Edinburgh project was added to the RCAHMS database in October 2010 and again in 2012.
The PMSA (Public Monuments and Sculpture Association) Edinburgh Sculpture Project has been supported by Eastern Photocolour, Edinburgh College of Art, the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust, Historic Scotland, the Hope Scott Trust, The Old Edinburgh Club, the Pilgrim Trust, the RCAHMS, and the Scottish Archive Network.
Field Visit (12 December 2001)
Main pediment: broken pediment with a finial at either end. Contains Heriot coat of arms surrounded by scrollwork. The base of the pediment has relief carvings of flowers, stars and geometrical patterns
The other pediments (five on main façade, four on left side of courtyard) contain relief carving of scrollwork and leaves incorporating a central flower motif. The base corners have relief flower, star or initials G H or geometrical diamond patterns.

(1) Pediments : Relief carving in pediment shape of geometric pattern and scrollwork.
(2) Panel: Relief decorative frame surrounds coat of arms of George Heriot above inscription. The coat of arms is composed of a shield carved with three roses (top) and a mullet [star] (below). The shield is surmounted by a helmet with closed visor, and has scrollwork either side of it.
(3) Clockface surround: High relief carvng, plain pillar either side with decorative scrollwork top and bottom. Clockface mounted in centre.
