Standing Building Recording (18 January 2021)
A Level 2 standing building survey was carried out on 18 January 2021; the weather was cold and sunny. The building is in poor condition with visible and hidden asbestos and live birds and bird droppings throughout the building. The internal survey was carried out with full PPE and with minimum contact with the structure of the building. There was full access apart from Room 2 which was locked. At least four phases of development were recorded. The original saw-toothed roof machine shop is a rectangular structure. Rail tracks and turntable contemporary with the machine shop, were located to the E of the structure. Subsequent phases of modification to the structure included construction of adjoining buildings to the E and S elevations and their later removal, modification to windows and doorways and removal of glazing from the eaves of the N gable. Latterly several windows were blocked with cement blocks, new doorways created, and others blocked, and a cement block structure was inserted into the interior in the SW corner of the structure.
