This intermediate station on the Edinburgh-Aberdeen (main) line of the former North British Rly was opened (by the Edinburgh and Northern Rly) on 17 September 1847. It was closed on 1 January 1917, re-opened on 2 March 1919 and closed to regular passenger traffic on 6 October 1969.

In the Architecture Catalogue, Sinclairtown Station was located under Leven. However, Sinclairtown is an area in Kirkcaldy, and the 1914 OS map shows a railway station at this grid reference.
