Dunvegan. Macleod estate village replacing an earlier settlement around the Castle. Various simple buildings designed or altered by Alexander Ross (contractors: Messrs Joass) include: Dunvegan Hotel, 1868-9 (a temperance hotel until 1947), and the Estate Office (Dunvegan House), early 19th century, the factor's house and later post office, altered and extended 1875. Pier, 1865 (succeeding Telford's just to south of 1815).

A crofting township, comprising eighty-four roofed buildings, one of which is a corn mill and one is a school, and fifteen unroofed building is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire, Isle of Skye 1881, sheet xxi).

One hundred roofed buildings, one of which is a school and twenty-four unroofed buildings are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10560 map (1968).
