Archaeology Notes

NO20SW 56 centred 2335 0103

A series of mills are situated at Walkerton along both banks of the River Leven, W of Leslie.

The mills are depicted on the 2nd edition of the OS 25-inch map (Fifeshire, 1892, sheet 23) and are visible as roofed and un-roofed buildings on large scale vertical air photographs (106G/UK 981, 4219-4221, flown 8 November 1945).

The mills are annotated on the maps as being of three types, Walkerton Bleachworks and Flax Mill with bleach field and Strathendry Paper Mill. A mill lead runs through the complex with footbridge connecting both banks of the River Leven.
