Archaeology Notes

NM55SW 8004 c. 527 539

N56 36.7 W6 1.8

NLO: Cnap a' Chailbe [name: NM 527 539]

Doirlinn a' Chailbe [name centred NM 510 542]

Sound of Mull [name centred NM 58 46].

Location formerly cited as NM 5254 5396 [N 56 36.7333 W 6 2].

See also NM55SW 8012.

(Classified as fishing vessel: date of loss cited as 3 May 1984). Strathbeg: this vessel foundered at moorings in Calva [Calve] Sound. Ex-FR 202?

(Location of loss cited as N56 36.73 W6 2.0).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The island of Cnap a' Chailbe is situated at the SE end of Doirlinn a' Chailbe, which itself forms the southern entrance into Tobermory Bay. It dries at low water.

Tobermory Bay is not noted as such on the 2001 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map but its well-defined area is centred around NM 510 550.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 18 March 2002.

The HO chart indicates a shallow wreck within the Doirlinn a' Chailbe at location N56 36.73 W6 2.0; this is probably to be equated with the Strathbeg. No depth is cited or seabed type indicated.

This wreck is also probably to be equated with that noted by Ridley within 'the channel round the back' of Calve Island, for which see NM55SW 8012.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 16 June 2005.

G Ridley 1990; HO chart (2390 (inset), 1976, revised 1991).
