Three saved after boat sinks off Drimnin. The three man crew of the Belfast fishing boat CAROL ANN had only a matter of seconds to abandon ship and jump into the ice cold waters of the Sound of Mull when their boat struck the notorious Rehmore Point [Rhemore: NM 5701 5047] two miles off Drimnin late on Wednesday night of last week, then slipped back into deep water. Two of the crew were strong swimmers and were able to assist their non-swimming friend who supported himself on the only article they were able to save - a suitcase.
The CAROL ANN was bound from Campbeltown to Tobermory. Two of the crew had intended clam fishing at the back of Mull, while the other, the former owner of the vessel, had planned to salvage a wreck in the Dervaig area. The farm manager at Drimnin estate, Mr.Richard Shaw, was returning from Lochaline when he saw a torch being waved in a field below the road. He stopped to investigate, and was surprised to see a pyjama-clad figure who told him about the wreck. Mr.Shaw took the three men to his home where they had a bath and were given beds for the night. Next morning he kitted them out with clothes of his own and took them by car to Lochaline. They hope to return soon with diving gear to investigate the possibility of salvaging the vessel.

(Classified as motor fishing vessel: date of loss cited as 18 November 1971). Carol Ann: this vessel stranded at Rhemore Point.
Registration: Belfast. Length: 17m.
(Location of loss cited as N56 35.05 W5 57.63).
I G Whittaker 1998.
The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative, being derived from the unverified location of loss that is cited by Whittaker. Rehmore or Rhemore Point is presumably to be equated with the extensive but unnnamed headland that is depicted by the OS around An Corr Eilean [name: NM 5681 5055] and Dun Ban [name: NM 5693 5054]. The settlement of Rhemore lies inland, around NM 5701 5047.
The classification cited by Whittaker remains unverified, but is accepted.
