The Poor House for the parish of Dunnet is depicted as roofed on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map, (Caithness, 1876, sheet 1), it is still shown roofed on the latest edition of the OS 1:10000 map, (1976) with a second building at right angles unroofed. The Ordnance Survey Name Book (ONB) states that the building was 'a temporary Poorhouse for destitute persons of this parish- those who have not sufficient means of properly providing such themselves' (ONB 1872).
