Archaeology Notes

HU45SW 4 4042 5163.

Indeterminate Remains. About 25 yards north of the heel-shaped cairn (HU45SW 1) is an area covered with stones, many of them seemingly placed, which may represent the remains of another prehistoric structure. It is 86' long by 10' broad in the middle, broadening to 18' near the north end, where there is also a suggestion of two horn-like projections, enclosing a semi-circular area.

RCAHMS 1946. Visited 1936.

Probable long, horned cairn.

C S T Calder 1965.

At HU 4038 5166, several artifically placed stones, as described by RCAHM. At the "horned" end is a sub-circular setting of six small upright stones, 2.5m in diameter. The "horns" are vague and probably fortuitous, and the whole structure too robbed and amorphous to classify.

Visited by OS(AA) 10th May 1968.
