Archaeology Notes

NM55SW 3 c. 518 527

In about 1870 a 'large' logboat, several 'canoes of a smaller size' and three boats of clinker construction were discovered during the drainage of Loch nam Miol, which has also been known as Loch na Mial or Lochnameal and formerly occupied a depression in the craggy terrain of the Aros district of NE Mull at an altitude of about 80m OD.

The largest logboat was found at a depth of 4' (1.2m) close to the causeway leading to the crannog (NM55SW 2) in the loch (at NM 5185 5273); it measured 17' (5.2m) in length by 3'6" (1.1m) in beam. The timber was identified as 'black oak' and was 'quite fresh and sound'. An unsuccessful attempt was made to preserve the boat by immersion in seawater.

On the evidence of the recorded measurements the slenderness coefficient of the boat was unusually small at 4.8. This may indicate that the full length was not preserved. The shape of the boat was not noted.
