Archaeology Notes

NR26NW 8001 c. 204 684

N55 49.7 W6 27.9

NLO: Rubha Lamanais [name: NR 204 684]

Machir Bay [name centred NR 197 627]

Saligo Bay [name centred NR 205 665]

Smaull [name: NR 214 685].

Formerly entered as NR26NW 9110 at NR 2040 6850 (N55 49.8 W6 37.5).

(Location cited as NR 206 677 [N55 49.38 W6 27.80]: depth about 5m).

G Ridley 1984.

(Classified as steel, steam trawler: registration cited as FD 336, and date of loss as 8 March 1938). Exmouth: this vessel was wrecked at Smaull Point, [on the] North side of Machir Bay.

Registration: Fleetwood. Built 1912. 236grt. Length: 37m. Beam: 6m.

(Location of loss cited as N55 49.67 W6 27.67).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. Smaull Point is not noted as such on the 1999 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map, but the name presumably applies to the major promontory of Rubha Lamanais. The farmstead of Smaull (NR26NW 61) lies inland, at NR 21399 68532.

This promontory is situated to the N of Saligo Bay, not Machir Bay as is cited by Whittaker.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 3 February 2010.
