Archaeology Notes

NH50NW 5 5498 0742

What may be a farmstead comprising an unroofed building with an attached enclosure is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1872, sheet lxxxv), but it is not shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1992).

Information from RCAHMS (SAH) 6 June 1996

A walkover survey in March 2003 revealed the site to be centred at NH 54989 07389 and consists of two buildings, with a circular enclosure at the W end. The buildings are aligned E-W. The first building measures 9.1 x 4.6m with walls 0.8m wide and up to 0.8m high, with a southern entrance. The second building is 9 x 4.6m with walls 0.8m wide and up to 1.2m high. It has entrances to the N and S. There is no sign of a connecting doorway between both buildings. The enclosure measures 8.9m EW by 9.7m NS, with walls spread to 2.6m and up to 0.6m high. There is a possible associated pen with a small stretch of walling at NH 54955 07377 of 10m with a bank to the rear 3.5m of rough boulders.
