Field Walking (25 September 2012 - 26 September 2012)
A walkover survey was carried out within the area of a small hydroelectric scheme along the Aberchalder Burn to the east of Loch Mhòr on the east side of Loch Ness. A total of 16 individual features were recorded including a farmstead, shieling huts, dykes, enclosures and an orthostat. The shielings and farmstead are likely to belong to the 18th century Abercalder township.
Archaeological Evaluation (May 2013 - 5 September 2013)
A programme of archaeological work comprising a watching brief on geotechnical test pits and the evaluation of several turf and stone structures was carried out within the area of a small hydroelectric scheme along the Aberchalder Burn to the east of Loch Mhòr on the east side of Loch Ness. During the watching brief no archaeological features were recorded within the test pits, however four undated stone built structures, possibly associated with nearby post medieval remains were recorded near the test pits. These were later evaluated and, although undated, tentatively identified as a possible building, enclosure and dyke of probably post-medieval date.
