Archaeology Notes

NG55NW 3 519 563.

(NG 519 563) Rigg is a depopulated township with two periods of occupation. The first is represented by at least ten houses with a number of outbuildings, yards and enclosures, all in a very ruinous condition. There is also a small disused burial ground, surrounded by a stone wall, and containing one crude, uninscribed, headstone. There are extensive areas of lazy-beds surrounding the township.

The later settlement, a ruined sheep-farm, comprises a main building of mortared rubble masonry with outbuildings (one still roofed), yards and sheep-pens.

Visited by OS (A C) 30 April 1961.
