The remains of two jetties, one constructed of stone and the other mainly of wood, lie 50m apart on the W side of Cramond Island. The ruinous stone jetty (NT 19545 78685) measures at least 17m in length from E to W by 2.85m in breadth and up to 1.55m in height. It has comprised two mortar-bonded flanking walls constructed of large boulders and stones, with a loose rubble core which, at its W end, has largely been washed out. The other jetty (NT 19524 78631) lies to the S of the first. At the top of the beach it comprises the stumps of a double row (1.5m apart) of squared wooden posts (240mm by 140mm) placed at intervals of about 2.7m. At the bottom of the beach the lower end of the jetty is marked by a spread of stone, indicating that the structure once measured at least 34m in length.
The stone jetty appears to be depicted though not annotated on the OS 25-inch map (Edinburghshire 1895, Sheet 1.9) but the other jetty is not shown. However, the use of squared timbers in its construction strongly suggests that it does not date earlier than the 19th century.
