Archaeology Notes

NS89NE 70 8990 9510

Three coal pits and a shaft are depicted, immediately W of Sauchie, on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perth and Clackmannan 1866, sheet cxxxiii). All but one coal pit are annotated as 'old'. They are linked to each other, the Devon Valley railway and Devon Iron Works (NS89NE 71) by an extensive series of tramways. A playing field occupies the site of the coal mines on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1992).

Information from RCAHMS (PM) 27 August 1996.
