Archaeology Notes

HU44SW 2 4104 4442.

HU 410 444. A square cairn at about 300' OD on a slight rise on the edge of a small shelf on the heather-covered hillside, looking SE across the valley.

The cairn measures 34' NE-SW by about 31' NW-SE and is edged by massive stones carefully set with their flat edges or sides in line to make a neat outer face. The SW side is almost intact but only a few stones of the facing of the other sides can be seen at present. Numerous stones are dotted about the interior and many appear to be in situ but they do not form any recognisable plan. There was certainly no entrance through the centre of the SE side.

A S Henshall 1963. Visited 1959; C S T Calder 1952, 1965.

At HU 4104 4444, cairn as described and planned by Henshall.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS(RL) 7th May 1968.
