Archaeology Notes

NS88NW 42.01 804 888

NS 804 888 In October 1994 an archaeological evaluation prior to the construction of a radio mast and access road was carried out to locate and record any trace of the Camelon to Ardoch Roman road. The supposed line of this was indicated on the OS 6" 1st edition map as intersecting the development area and had apparently been confirmed by excavations nearby in advance of motorway construction (Milne 1972, 39).

In compliance with a specification drawn up by Central Regional Council three trial trenches, comprising a total area of 53 square metres, were opened perpendicular to the supposed road alignment, in order to detect both the road and any quarry pits or other activity associated with its construction. The area had been heavily disturbed due to activity when the M80 slip road and service station were under construction. Modern material was recorded to a depth of at least 1.5m above subsoil, with substantial deposits of red shale, concrete and other associated material within each trench. No trace of the road was located.

A report has been deposited with the NMRS.

NS 802 888 (centre) An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in December 2003 on the site of a proposed livestock auction mart, situated directly NW of the Stirling services area at the A9 Bannockburn interchange. The aim was locate the remains of the Roman road (NS88NW 42.1) which once passed by Stirling, joining the Antonine Wall to Ardoch fort, and to locate the remains of the farmstead of Herdsbrae (NS88NW 62).

Various landscape boundaries and other features were recorded, as was evidence of localised open cast coal extraction. A metalled surface consisting of packed gravel and pebbles was recorded, and interpreted as the Roman road.

Archive to be deposited in the NMRS.
