Archaeology Notes

NO59SE 20 553 908

Air photography (AAS/96/01/G2/28 and AAS/96/01/G3/3, dated 27 February 1996) has recorded the grass-covered footings of a small rectangular enclosure in an area of rough grazing on the N side of the Water of Feugh.

Classified by Aberdeenshire Archaeological Service as house foundations and enclosure.

(Approx. NO 557 908) A longhouse lies to the NW of those described on NO59SE 12, on the opposite (N) side of the Water of Feugh.

Activities

Field Visit (5 December 1996)

Two buildings and an enclosure, which are situated on the haughland of the Water of Feugh, were recorded during a pre-afforestation survey by Headland Archaeology (NMRS MS 899/36, no.13). Both buildings have stone walls. The W building measures 8m by 4m and has a single partition. The E building is smaller, measuring 6m by 3m with a small structure attached to the W end. The enclosure measures 22m from NE to SW by 9m and is divided in half with a further sub-division on the SW. It has previously been described under (NO59SE 13).

Site recorded during a short-notice forestry survey undertaken by Headland Archaeology Ltd over roughly 4.7 sqkm of land on the N side of the Water of Feugh in the Forest of Birse.
