(NG 2499 0513) Dun nam Berbh (NAT)

OS 6" map, Inverness-shire, 2nd ed., (1903)

Probably a wheelhouse reduced to its lowest courses. 'Wheel-house' pottery found here is in possession of the laird, J L Campbell, Canna House.

Private 6" map of T C Lethbridge 1953.

An unintelligible pattern of overgrown footings to a cluster of four or five buildings covering an area measuring about 16.0m in diameter.

One building appears to measure about 4.5m NE-SW by about 2.8m, whilst the others are possible oval or sub- circular. All are so denuded and overgrown however, that the plan of the complex is not discernible.

None of the structures can be identified as a wheelhouse.

Visited by OS (I S S) 27 May 1972.

The pottery, still in Mr. Campbell's possession, was found on the ground surface amongst the buildings when a fire burnt off the vegetation. It is coarse undecorated handmade ware of uncertain date. Pottery of this kind was being made well into the medieval period on Canna.

Visited by OS (A A) 2 June 1972.

There is little visible evidence to indicate the presence of any settlement on the tidal stack of Dun nam Berbh and certainly no trace of a wheelhouse. The top of the stack is extremely overgrown, and all that was visible on the date of visit were two contiguous hollows on the E side of the summit. These measure about 3m in diameter and may indicate the presence of structures.
