Activities

Note (27 August 2021)

Alfred Nobel started his Ardeer, North Ayrshire explosives factory in 1871. In 1878 he started up the Westquarter plant at Reddingnuir near Polmont to supply Ardeer with fulminate of mercury. Fulminate was used as a base charge in early detonators.

A Swedish expert in fumlminate of mercury production, Carl Olof Lundholm, joined Nobel's company. He later became the Manager at Ardeer, retiring in 1920. His son, Gosta Lundholm was Superintendant at Nobel's Modderfontein explosives factory in South Africa.
