Archaeology Notes

NH35NE 6 364 559

An enclosure is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Ross-shire 1881, sheet lxxxvi). The S side of the enclosure was submerged when Loch Meig was created by a hydro-electric scheme, but the N side is shown on the current edition of the 1:10000 map (1971).

Information from RCAHMS (AKK), 5 March 1996.

Activities

Field Visit (19 February 2008 - 19 February 2008)

Srp Note (11 January 2011)

The farmstead of Cnocan an Fhradhaire occupies a S facing slope on the N shore of Loch Meig, 1 kilometre W of the dam. The remains comprise the stone footings of three buildings (NOSAS site survey numbers 705, 799 and 800) and an enclosure (704). Part of the enclosure has been inundated by the reservoir and most of the site now lies within a mature coniferous plantation. The enclosure is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Ross-shire 1881, sheet lxxxvi).

Further details of these and other associated sites can be found in the Strathconon Phase 3 Report (pages 35 and 36) produced by the North of Scotland Archaeology Society and appended to this record.
