Archaeology Notes

NF87NE 22 8511 7564.

Area : NF 848 761) A hoard of gold ingots and finger-rings was found in a sandhill at the NE end of Oransay, west of Vallaquie, between 1865 and 1870. The site was immediately to the SE of some ruined cairns (NF87NE 19).

Anderson (J Anderson 1883) described and figured examples of plain and plaited finger-rings 'found somewhere in the Hebrides' and Beveridge thought it very probable that these were from Oransay, but in any case he was certain they were similar.

Anderson's rings, now in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS), included one plain penannular ring and six plaited rings.

J Anderson 1883; E Beveridge 1911.

According to local information the gold hoard was found at NF 8511 7564 by two shepherds.

Visited by OS (R D) 23 June 1965.
